About Pimlico
Pimlico is a relatively new area of London. The area we know and love today only started life in 1843. Granted, that is almost 200 years ago, but as some of London is over 2,000, with some areas even holding keys to life in the area from the Bronze Age and beyond, Pimlico is still very much in nappies compared with other parts of the city.
This is because Pimlico was owned by The Grosvenor Estate. This estate was in no rush to develop the area. In fact, in the early 1800s and before this, Pimlico was famous for its wholesome produce of vegetables and herbs. This was created in the Neat House Gardens, and in the 1820s, these gardens became a resort of sorts. There were taverns and industry dotted around the area to cater for the gardeners and anyone who came from the city to see the gardens.
In the 1840s, though, this began to change. Thomas Cubbit brought the land from another developer who had come up against rather a lot of opposition from the gardeners. When Cubbit got it, though, he didn’t let this opposition stand in the way of growth. Cubbit had already built and designed a lot of architecture in London, including the Eastern facade of Buckingham Palace and Belgravia. So, in 1843, he began laying out the streets and squares that we know today as Pimlico.
Cubbit was very focused on uniformity, which is why the houses in Pimlico are laid out very precisely. Cubbit also worked closely with landlords of the time. One in particular, the Second Marques of Westminster, was a big fan of Italian stucco terraces, which can be seen all over the area.
While Pimlico may not be as old as other parts of London, it is an incredibly impressive piece of urban design with a now-iconic style that has been copied across the city ever since!
