About Epping
Epping has a very interesting and long history. The first human settlement in the area (as far as historians and archaeologists have discovered so far) dates back as far as 7,500 BC. However, the tale of modern Epping is actually a tale of two villages, not one.
In The Domesday Book, Epping is referred to as Eppinga. And is described as a small settlement on the edge of the forest. The name is almost certainly Anglo-Saxon, so it is likely that the settlement existed long before the Norman conquest in 1066.
The other settlement was known as Epping Heath. This developed south of the other settlement in the 12th century as a result of forest clearance. As the settlements grew and Epping Market became a very important cattle market in all of Essex, the villages became towns, and slowly but surely, the towns became a town, and Epping was born.
Epping has a host of history linked to it. And walking down Epping High Street today can give you a glimpse of it. The entire high street is designated as a Conservation Area because of the beautiful buildings. So, grab a coffee and go explore some of Epping’s amazing history right on your doorstep!
