The West London that you know and love today has changed a lot throughout the years. In fact, it only really started looking like the West London we know today relatively recently. But the origins of West London can be traced back to the early 7th century!
Legend has it that a fisherman named Edric, a local to the area, ferried a stranger in tattered clothing across the Thames to Thorney Island. The stranger was St Peter, also a fisherman, who had come to consecrate the newly built church on the island. St Peter awarded Edric with a bountiful catch as a way of thanking him for the ride and instructed him to present the king and the bishop of London with a salmon along with other proof that the consecration of the new church had taken place. This is still a tradition at this church to this day. Each year, St Peter is celebrated with the presentation of fish in a ceremony.
While the story may be unfamiliar to you, the church in the story certainly isn’t. It is one of London’s most famous landmarks today: Westminster Abbey. In the 7th century, of course, this was but a humble church, but still a very important landmark. Slowly but surely, the Abbey evolved and this is an excellent example of what London does best: evolve.
Parts of West London were the very first to be urbanised. Most parts of the city had to wait until the 19th century to be urbanised, yet the West End was actually first developed heavily in the 12th century.
