Acton became part of London in 1965, and it has changed a lot over the years, just like many other parts of London. In fact, if we went back only a hundred years, you probably wouldn’t recognise your street. If we travelled back to 200 years ago, your street may not have even existed!
For much of Acton’s life, it was a very small settlement. During the Middle Ages, Acton only had a few homes, and most of these were along the Uxbridge Road and very close to the parish Church.
The first recorded mention of this little settlement was in 1181. So, historians are quite certain that nothing existed in the area in the 1000s, as the Domesday Book would have mentioned it. So, it is widely believed that Acton’s first settlement was a Saxon one. This is very likely as the name Acton actually means “Oak Town” in Anglo-Saxon. This may suggest that the settlement was surrounded by oak trees, perhaps it was a settlement of boat builders or carpenters, sadly this isn’t known.
We do know that ever since the 17th century, Acton has been very popular with wealthier Londoners who would use it as an escape from the smoky city. That’s right, at this time, Acton was still in the countryside!
The first ever stagecoach to travel between London and Acton was The Acton Machine, and its first trip was made in 1764. Over the years, more and more stagecoaches were introduced, showing the popularity of the area. Finally, Acton’s first railway was introduced in 1853, and slowly but surely, the area changed forever as more and more Londoners escaped the busy and smoky city to live in a quieter area.
Places like Acton show the beautiful evolution of London throughout time. In under 200 years, Acton has changed forever, we wonder what Acton will look like in another 200 years?
