About Chiswick
Chiswick has changed a lot over the years, and the name really shows just how much. The area was first recorded about a thousand years ago under the Old English name of “Ceswican”. This means “Cheese Farm”. So, it is very likely that a farmer moved into the area and created a cheese farm in the middle of nowhere and the name caught on. There may have been a few other houses in the area for workers, but for a very long time, Chiswick was simply a humble cheese farm.
There was also a cheese fair in the area. This was probably created by the farmer creating the cheese, although not much is known about this annual cheese fair. It is said to have taken place in the riverside area of Duke’s Meadows and ran annually right up until the 18th century.
In 1181, the St Nicholas Church in Chiswick was built on Church Street. This is a rather substantial place of worship for a humble farming settlement. However, the area was growing, and more and more farmers and workers were settling in the area.
Chiswick has developed a lot over the years but only really began looking like the Chiswick we know and love today in the 20th century. Until then, it was all about the cheese!
