Basildon, the name, at least, has a Saxon origin. It means ‘Beorhtels Hill’. However, human history in this area goes back to the early Stone Age and perhaps even beyond that. Thousands of years ago, Basildon was used by roaming hunters and over the last century, stone tools and weapons have been found from these people.
These roaming hunters decided that they quite liked Basildon and decided to stay. Several years ago, a Bronze Age axe was found at Vange, along with a rather complex Bronze Age settlement. Settlements are also known from the Iron Age, and these are even more permanent than the Brozone Age examples.
Even during the Roman occupation, the surrounding areas were built on, but not Basildon itself. In fact, when the Saxons invaded after the Romans left, they preferred to build their settlements away from the Roman settlements, and this means that Basildon likely became quite an important site at the time.
Throughout its history, Basildon has seen a lot of action and a lot of different faces come and go. This includes, to name a few, Bronze Age settlers, Iron Age Cheiftain, Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans and was even mentioned in the Domesday Book several times. Basildon offers a very interesting look at the history of the whole of the UK and the people that have come to its shores throughout history.
