Grays takes its name from a very famous knight, Henry de Grai. He was a descendant of another very famous knight, this time a Norman knight called Anchetil de Greye. The original name for the settlement in the area was actually Grays Thurrock. Thurrock is a Saxon word that means “the bottom of a ship”. Sadly the reason why the bottom of Greye’s ship was so important is lost to history. We aren’t too sure why the spelling of Grays changes over time, but it is likely because people weren’t sure of the spelling and weren’t too bothered about getting it correct.
The de Greye (de Grai) family were at the forefront of British leadership and rule for centuries. They were extremely good in battle, and this propelled them into the trusted inner cycle of many kings throughout the history of the family. In fact, it was Richard the 1st himself that granted the manor of Grays Thurrock to the de Greye family in 1195.
So, there is a long history of knights in Grays, and it has been manor closely linked to kings and queens for nearly a thousand years!
