Upminster was a rural village for a very long time. It grew into the town we know today in around about 1885. This is when the railway first connected Upminster to London. And wealthy people from London moved out into places like Upminster to avoid the smoke of the city.
The first mention of Upminster was in 1062, right before the Norman conquest. It was also mentioned in the Domesday Book as Upmunstra. In Old English, this means “the large church on high ground”. This suggests that Upminster was already quite an established town with St Laurence parish church standing tall above the River Ingrebourne.
Still, Upminster was still a rather small town, and this continued right up until the railway came to town. In 1881 the Upminster parish population was 1,202 residents. However, in 1951, this shot up to 13,038 residents. This is all thanks to the connections to London made possible by the railway. Throughout the 20th century, housing developments around Upminster made it the beautifully charming place it is today.
While Upminster is now part of Greater London – and has been since 1965 – it has never lost its small-town charm and sense of character.
