Did you know that Hornchurch has a site of scientific interest? 450,000 years ago, during the Anglian Ice Age (and no, not our typical winter), an ice sheet stretched to just south of St Andrew’s Church. This makes it the furthest south any ice sheet has reached in Britain. The discovery was even part of a Channel 4/ National Geographic series in 2011.
There have even been discoveries of Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age tools in Hornchurch. This suggests that people have lived in the area for thousands of years. Even Roman remains have been found here. This was on Mardyke Farm in South Hornchurch. Suggestions of a Roman settlement have been discussed, but more investigation is needed.
From the Romans, we have to skip a few centuries. It seems that, up until the 12th century, not much happened in Hornchurch after the Romans. In the 12th century, though, Hornchurch developed into a little village. At least, this is the first mention of Hornchurch in any records. It must have been quite the established settlement, though as by 1163 (roughly), a church had been built in the village on the same site where St Andrew’s Church stands today.
The small village of Hornchurch was made up of farmers mostly. And it is responsible to believe that these farmers were taking their wares to Romford to sell. Hornchurch also had quite a large leather working industry. Skinners, tanners as well as shoemakers and many others called Hornchurch home and would go to Romford Market to make a living.
