Essex has a very interesting history that compasses many of the important stages in the growth of England throughout History. Before the Romans landed on our shores, Essex was ruled by the Celtic Trinovantes tribe. It was actually a dispute between this tribe and another one that led to the Roman invasion in 54 BC. They then allied themselves with the Romans when they returned in 43 AD.
Essex also has a history with every other invading force that has come to England throughout history. The name itself is living proof of this. It was one of the kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England, and actually means “East Saxons”. In 991, Essex was home to a battle between the Saxons and the Vikings. This resulted in the complete defeat of the Saxons by the Vikings and is commemorated in a poem called The Battle of Maldon.
Much of the development around Essex was caused by the railway. By 1843, the railway had come to Essex with direct roots in London, and this caused a huge boom in property building throughout the area. As the area grew and more train stations were added, more and more housing projects were created.
So, from Celts, Romans, Saxons and Vikings to Victorian development, Essex has seen it all over a very long and fascinating history.
