Croydon hasn’t always been a London Borough. In fact, it was actually part of Wallington in the county of Surrey for hundreds of years. The first mention of Croydon was in the Domesday Book just after the Norman conquest of England. At this time, Croydon had a population of 365 people. Croydon now has more people living in it than Cardiff, Belfast and Iceland!
While 365 people may sound small, this was actually a rather big settlement in the Middle Ages. Many places in London were only very small settlements back then, with populations of 50 or less. In fact, Croydon’s second historical mention shows how much the place had changed in 700 years. In 1783, another survey was carried out in Croydon, which mentioned that there were only 48 villagers! We aren’t too sure what happened in Croydon during this period. Perhaps more land was used for farming, and people needed to settle elsewhere.
One of the most important things in Croydon over the years has always been the market. The Surrey Street Market dates back to the 13th century, 1276, to be specific. The market that you still visit today has been trading for 7 days a week ever since. Nowadays, you can enjoy treats from local artisans, bakers, local coffee and a great deal more.
Back in 1276, some of the stalls at the Surrey Street Market likely sold some very familiar stuff. There was certainly fruit, veg, meat and baked goods, for example. Granted, the meat was likely alive, and the carrots were probably a bit wonkier than nowadays, but the stalls offered everything the local people needed to survive. Croydon was also a hub for leather tanning during this time, though. If you know anything about leather tanning, you’ll know that the smells of the market would have been very different back then.
Croydon has a remarkable link to religion and is actually considered one of the holiest places in England. The reason for this is rather strange, though. It is simply because several Archbishops of Canterbury used Croydon as a rest stop between Kent and Lambeth Palace. There was even a grand and beautiful palace constructed in Croydon (Croydon Palace) for the Archbishops to sleep in. and they did so for over 500 years!
This connection to the church is actually why the market in Croydon was established in the first place. People visited the area frequently to pray and to be near the Archbishops. So, market stalls started appearing as the locals realised they could flog the religious visitor’s food, drink and trinkets during their visit. The Croydon locals were a crafty and clever bunch!
In 1831, Decimus Burton, one of the most notable architects in England at the time, created a spa and pleasure gardens in Croydon. And it quickly became London’s ultimate leisure destination, with people flocking from all over London and elsewhere to The Royal Beulah Spa. And what did the locals do when they arrived? Sold the visitors more food, drink and trinkets at the market, of course! Crafty, clever Croydoners!
