When many of us think of England, we think of an awesome place full of diverse cultures and amazing people. We also think of the traditional English ale and beer. Oh, and fish and chips, of course! Well, do you know where you can find all three of these very English things? Why, at the local alehouse, of course!
You may be wondering why we are talking about pubs. Well, that is because Angel is actually named after a pub! Many areas of London can trace their names back to Saxon leaders or settlements that date back even further. In the case of Angel, though, the area was named after a pub.
In the early 16th century, there was a building on the Great North Road known as the Sheepcote. It may have been used to house sheep at some point in its life, but this fact is sadly lost to history. However, the building was used for various things over the years until it began its life as an inn.
You’ll find many pubs across London called inns nowadays, but an inn was slightly different during the 16th century. Of course, an inn sold ale and beer and often food. However, it was also where weary travellers could stay a night or two, have their horses fed and get a good night’s rest.
By 1614, the inn in this area was known as The Angel, and the name seemed to stick with the whole area. There is good reason to suggest that there wasn’t much of a settlement in Angel at the time. The pub stood near a toll gate. So any trade or work in the area would have been at the inn caring for travellers or trying to make some money off of them.
While the pub has been rebuilt a few times, it is still operating as a pub today and was even included in Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens as the place where Oliver first meets the Artful Dodger. To learn more about the pub’s interesting past, you can visit it, have a quiet pint and take a look at the amazing information scattered around the pub on the walls.
