Despite Mile End being a hamlet and one of the earliest suburbs of London, it holds a very interesting past. Which is rather surprising, really. Considering this little suburb is just a stone’s throw away from the old City of London, its links to London make it a very important and interesting place.
The hamlet of Mile End was first recorded in 1288. It was built one mile east of Aldgate, hence the name. It was one of the most imposing ways of entering the city back then. Most traders and business people would steer clear of Mile End. It was even where Wat Tyler assembled his followers during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.
As you imagine, a place like Mile End has seen a lot of colourful characters over the years. There is a blue plaque outside 88 Mile End Road that marks the site of the house where Captain James Cook once lived. Oliver Cromwell is also linked to Mile End. He granted permission for the first Jewish burial ground in the area in 1657. This is now considered one of the most hallowed spots in England for the Jewish community.
Mile End was very much a rural place for hundreds of years, but industry did begin to creep into the area as the city grew. There was a brewery and distillery, as well as merchant houses and shops, built in the 18th century. Slowly but surely, Mile End started to look and feel as it does today, with the city merging with it in the 19th century once and for all.
