Since the 19th century, Soho has been a centre of entertainment that many Londoners have enjoyed over the years. However, the area was first developed by Henry VIII in 1536. Before this, Soho and much of the surrounding area was actually farmland. A far cry from the bustling city streets that we know and love today.
King Henry VIII turned it into a royal park where the aristocracy could enjoy hunting trips outside of the smokey city. In the late 17th century, Soho became a parish in its own right, and buildings started to pop up. These buildings were reserved for the upper classes of London, including Soho Square which was laid out and developed in the 1680s.
Around this time, St Anne’s Church was also built. St Anne’s has always been a very significant landmark in Soho along with the Church of our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Gregory and St Patrick’s Church in Soho Square.
Of course, nowadays Soho is known for its entertainment, although we are quite sure that entertainment was rife in Soho from the 17th century onwards. Still, when it comes to theatre and music, Soho only really became famous for these in 20th century. The Windmill Theatre on Great Windmall Street and various music clubs around Soho quickly became the forefront of experimental music and theatre. The independent film industry in Britian is also based in Soho.
Although the entertainment in Soho has changed since Henry VIII created it, entertainment has very much been at the the core of the area since the very beginning. Just like the rest of London, Soho has evolved over time to cater to different types of entertainment. So, from a royal park reserved for the king and his friends to hunt, to some of the best music clubs and studios in England offering the latest and greatest musicians a place to experiment, Soho has seen some of the best entertainment imaginable in England.
